After three rounds of critiques from other designers and revisions, I ended up with this final. I added a dirt layer to supply more of a rustic tone and to imply that this is not a clean shaven story. It's dirty and full of social issues, death, and sacrifice. I wasn't technically required to add the title and author to the spine but after considering it, I wanted to give it opportunity to be on a thicker book where there would be more space for a name. The inside flaps providing an "about the author" section and critics reviews are filled with place holder text for pending content.
