The morning had a surprise up its sleeve. There's Such great opportunity when you begin a painting with zero expectations. My initial plan was to create a background and throw a figure painting or portrait (waste up) on the left third of the canvas.
During the background stage I got pleasantly distracted and I decided to toss some clouds into the sky. This painting evolved from there.
Inspired by Matthew 27:45, the dark sky behind the red clouds is what reminded me of the sheer darkness of the sky during the death of Jesus on the cross. massive earthquakes and sudden midday darkness was recorded during that time, and my imagination wonders what it looked like across the world. Ancient Native Americans: what did they see? The Alpine tribes in Iceland and the vikings in the vastness of the ocean. I can't help but wonder, "What did the others see?"
